COVER STORY

One of my favorite anime sagas of all time is the one known as Macross, or to you non-anime fans, Robotech.  Now we get the first domestic Macross title for a video game system, Macross VFX2, and I bet you would like to know how it stacks up to the competition.

First off, VFX2 is an air-based dogfighting game where you take control of a Valkyrie from the Macross universe.  This game even allows you to transform your Valkyrie into its' robotic mode.  As for the game itself, the control takes place in a limit-less 3D environment with enemy fighters closing in to kick your butt.  The control takes a little bit getting used to since the 3D evirionment is very true with the laws of phyisics, climbing is done slowly while deciding is done very quickly.  The weapons in the game are basicaly missles and regular gunfire, and if you are familar with Macross you will also know that you can shoot alot of missles at one time toward a particular enemy fighter and you'll see him trying to evade all of them, TOO COOL.

The games' graphics are quite 2nd generation Playstation, with nice polygon models that make up the fighters, but the rest of the graphics is a part of the games' downside.  The backdrop in the demo that I played takes place over Macross City with the Macross itself in the background, but it all looks very grainy and unattractive.

Overall, it is a must buy, that's if you are a diehard Macross fan.  Otherwise, you can give this one a try, just don't expect Ace Combat.
