Marvel Vs. Capcom

Dreamcast (Import)

1-4 players

Capcom

Well with all the hype surrounding the Dreamcast and it's amazing 3D power, one must begin to wonder about it's 2D power. When Capcom signed on to do DC games, everyone knew that there would be a 2D fighter to appear on the new console. In come Marvel Vs. Capcom!! Probably the greatest 2D fighter on the face of the planet (next to Street Fighter Alpha 3 of course). But can the DC handle this monster game without sacrificing loss of animation or speed? Read on and find out..... Ok, with all of the hype out the door it is time for some reality. When you first power on Marvel Vs. Capcom you are greeted with the same intro that is in the arcade version. Even down to MegaMan doing the voiceover. The scenes from the intro almost make you believe that they are just FMV or something and not actual gameplay because they move so damn fast. Well as you enter the game your whole knowledge of 2D games goes straight out the window.

The character select screen is full of familiar faces as well as some new comers to the game. There are also helper characters, they are used as special moves to lay attacks on your opponent. They can only be used a certain number of times so use them wisely. You select two characters as your main fighters, they can be tagged in and out, and while they are out their energy slowly replenishes to represent rest.

The game palys just like the previous "vs." series and also adds a team up hyper move where both characters can be on the screen at the same time with you controlling both of them!! It gets pretty wild when all four players are on the screen bashing it out. The controls are standard SF controls, three kicks and three punches. The only complaint I have about the DC version is the controller is just not suited for Capcom 2D fighters at all! The two buttons underneath the controller make it difficult to use them and the d-pad is just not as responsive as say the PS or Saturn controllers.

Now to the graphics, what can I say? Well the DC pulls off Mvs.C without even breaking a sweat. The animation is absolutely flawless and there is entirely zero slowdown. I mean it is utterly amazing that even with all four characters on the screen all doing hyper combos the game doesnt lose one inch of speed or animation. It is sometimes scary to watch the screen and just be in total awe as the game moves so fluidly its like watching the arcade!

I am in total fascination that the DC is just as much a 2D powerhouse as it is a 3D monster. This system has it all, the DC is definitely a gamer's machine. It may very well replace the PS as the greatest system of the 20th century. This game is a must buy for fighting game fans as well as fans of Capcom in general. It is definitely a masterpiece. That is about all for now check back next week as ZT gets his hands on Blue Stinger and I shall post a review as soon as possible, but for now this is ZT sayin see-ya.
